Despite equal pay being a right since the 1970's women are still often paid less than men for comparable work. Sometimes this can be a clear case of an hourly rate being less, but in others bonuses targeted towards specific occupations may indirectly discriminate against women. Single Status, or Job Evaluation refers to a process whereby jobs are objectively regraded to reflect the duties undertaken in such way that jobs of comparable skill requirement are paid equally.
Moray Council was one of the first councils in Scotland to begin the Single Status process and an agreement was reached that took effect in December 2006. While some workers did see a reduction in pay (with protection for 4 years), the majority benefited, longstanding inequalities were removed and we avoided gradings being imposed with unfavourable terms as has been the case in many other councils.
Moray College is now in the middle of conducting Job Evaluation, and all posts within the college will be looked at in due course. If you are a member in Moray College and are concerned about your grading then please contact the Branch Office, on 01343 563170.
