Scottish Local Government Service Group - 3 September

With it being less than a week since CoSLA had announced they were imposing a 3 year pay deal, understandably what action to take about this dominated proceedings at the Scottish Local Government Service Group Conference on 3 September. Broadly speaking the discussion was based around two views. The first was that we should continue to try to negotiate, using ACAS if necessary, while consulting with members further about potential action that could be taken. The second called on UNISON to show strength of opinion by moving quickly towards a ballot on industrial action.

With a clear view from many branches, including Moray that there was not widespread support at present for industrial action a more pragmatic view prevailed. With some councils were reportedly eager for industrial action to take place, seeing it as an opportunity to make budget savings as people are off work, we will not rise to what is a clear provocation by employers. At present UNISON will seek to keep options open and secure the best possible deal for members.
