Introduction

Hi, I'm Kieron Green - Moray Unison Young Members Officer. I've been a member of Unison for 2 1/2 years now - joining shortly after I started working for Moray Council. I am 24 years old and work as a Science Technical Assistant in Lossiemouth High School (see http://www.lossiehigh.co.uk/ ).

I've been Young Members' Officer for just over a year now. Being the only person at the AGM under the age of 27 seemed to be enough qualifications to get the job! Since then I've trained as a steward, have attended Scottish Young Members Committee meetings in Glasgow and been to the National Young Members Weekend. At these events I've learnt more about the structure of Unison and how we help support our members. I've also had the opportunity to meet other activists from across the Scotland and the UK. It's not all been work though - there's been plenty of socialising and fun as well!

Unfortunately in Moray we do not have many young people working for the council and other organisations we represent, and even fewer who are Unison members. Finding out how we can increase the number of Young Members, and help increase the recruitment of young workers is something I believe needs to be identified and worked on. If you've any ideas then please let me know!

I'm not going to remain young forever (maybe I'm past that already) and so it would be useful to find other Young Members who would be willing to take on the role of Young Members Officer once I become ineligible. Again, if you are interested, let me know!

Right, that's all for now :)
